HUBI-B400: Complex Problems of Humanity. Topic: On Bats, Pigs, and Man: Preparing for the Next Pandemic
We will learn about viruses, bats, pigs, and zoonosis (the transmission of disease from animals to humans), and about the One Health Approach and how it can help us prepare for the next pandemic. We will meet some scary viruses (Nipah), discover why bats are tolerant to them, and explore the social aspect of pandemic preparedness and prevention, as well as the dark sides of biomedical science (as if the viruses are not enough). At the end of the term you will pick a project and develop a novel idea that could help prevent the next pandemic.
Course is open to Human Biology majors only and must be taken within two semesters of graduating.
