Course Description

This is a second 8 weeks course.

The medical profession is dealing with new ethical challenges brought on by novel technology, advancing scientific research, shifting norms, and the institutionalization of medicine. This course is an introduction to those challenges. The focus will be on so-called “thick” ethical problems, taking ethics not as an abstract conceptual framework, but rather as something intimately connected with how we live and act. It explores a variety of problems in clinical ethics, research ethics, and public health ethics, with an emphasis on modern American medicine.
