When I arrived in 1993, I think Ed Grant had just officially retired, but he remained active around the department, teaching portions of X551 and related courses. I particularly remember his joint graduate seminar with John Walbridge on Islamic science and its role in carrying Greek knowledge through the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.  Dr. Grant was a delight, always enthusiastic and  encouraging.
