The Department of History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine is sad to announce that Edward Grant, Distinguished Professor Emeritus of History and Philosophy of Science, passed away on June 21, 2020. Dr. Grant's teaching career at Indiana University spans over thirty years, beginning in 1959. He was instrumental in starting the department later to be known as History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine. A distinguished medievalist, Dr. Grant wrote prolifically throughout his professorship at Indiana University. He was a prominent member of several organizations, such as the Medieval Academy of America, the Académie Internationale d'Histoire des Sciences, and the History of Science Society. Grant has received many honors and awards, including the George Sarton Medal in 1992, the most prestigious award given by the History of Science Society. He was a fine scholar, and he will be missed.
