Alabama Symposium Presentation, University of Alabama & Birmingham Museum of Art

The symposium "Challenging Empire: Women, Art, and the Global Early Modern World" at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa and Birmingham Museum of Art, is part of the initiative Global Makers: Women Artists in the Early Modern Courts of Europe and Asia (https://adhc.lib.ua.edu/makers/s/makers/page/makers). The symposium broadens our understanding and exploration of cultural productions made by early modern women internationally.

On March 2, 2024, Dr. Caterina Agostini discussed "Women’s Contributions in Early Modern Italy: Exploring Cultural Production in Art and Printing" with co-author Daniela Rovida (University of Notre Dame). Their paper examines early modern women’s artistic production, printing, and diplomacy within the context of patronage in early modern courts. These case studies, presented through digital humanities methods visualizing geographic locations and timelines, highlight how underrepresented women contributed to art and science, as well as the circulation of new ideas and aesthetics, in fields traditionally dominated by men.
